''All Nighter'' in Montréal |
 |
On March 1st 2008, come spend the night with us between 7:00PM to 3:00AM Follow our journey in four parts and discover artists whose work is as varied as it is fascinating.
At galerie [sas] the exhibition small is beautiful unites ten artists who have daringly reconsidered their approach to create unedited works especially for this tribute to the miniature. At the Belgo, 372 St Catherine Street West, #416
At the Hall des pas perdus de la Place des Arts you’ll find Karine Giboulo’s installation All You Can Eat. Giboulo has constructed an imaginary world that is as critical as it is lucid, and that positions innocence and fantasy alongside mockery and social engagement.
At Hotel W, see the Secret Silk Society, by Carlito Dalceggio. This artist’s work proves to be an existential laboratory in which he strives to draw on his deepest truth and express it in a universal visual language, with a timeless rhythm. 901 Square Victoria
Hotel Gault is showing a series of paintings entitled Visages, by Jaber Lufti. Lufti presents us with a world in motion in which nothing stays the same, where countless stories are told simultaneously and remain unfinished; leaving a fantasy hovering that is as fascinating as it intriguing. 449 St Hélène

A new artist in the gallery! |
 |
A new artist has entered the gallery : Jingyuan Juang. Coming from China, she explains her artistic perspective:
"Two thousand years ago the First Emperor of China ordered the construction of more than six thousand life-sized Terracotta warrior sculptures. They were to be buried in his tomb at the time of his death, as the Emperor believed the warriors would protect him in his afterlife.
In 1974, the Terra-cotta Warriors were discovered intact and have since promoted to be an important symbol of Chinese nationalism, as well as the splendor of Chinese art.
I am currently performing my own excavation, using painting as a means for discovery and exposition. My intention is not to create historically and politically correct paintings, but rather to impose a contemporary rendering of these traditional Terra-cotta warriors. Though once viewed as protectors of the afterlife, and later as the symbol of China, these icons have now become subject to my own interpretation. As such, familiar elements of the ancestral Chinese sculptures are depicted subjectively, by means of a naïve, impressionistic technique. Each canvas has it is own isolated narrative where the awkwardly proportioned figures engage with one another amidst their otherworldly surroundings. In situating the heroic warrior faces on top of awkward, unnatural forms, I hope to counter-balance the historical and spiritual weight of my subject matter with a degree of unfettered playfulness.
Both my use of mediums such as rice paper, and bold color reflects an unconventional way of combining eastern and western artistic traditions. Though some propagandistic elements are filtered into the aesthetic of the work, they are not political charged, in contrast with many contemporary Chinese artists." |
