The Association des galeries d'art contemporain (AGAC) is a non-profit organisation whose mandate is to sensitise the public to contemporary art, to contribute to the promotion of current artistic creation, to stimulate the art market and to defend the interest of its members. Founded in 1985, the AGAC has always remained faithful to its mission by organising numerous innovative activities: the contemporary art fair Entrée libre à l'art contemporain, La Grande Virée (a free shuttle bus circuit linking member galleries of the AGAC), Peinture Peinture (a major exhibition of contemporary abstract painting) and the foundation of the art quarterly ETC MONTRÉAL. More recently, in 1999, the AGAC was invited to New Art Barcelona, that city's major contemporary art fair. Upon returning to Montreal, the AGAC renewed with the art fair formula and inaugurated the Salon du Printemps de Montréal in 2002. The AGAC stemmed from Montreal art dealers' will to ensure the acknowledgement and viability of the contemporary art market. Presently, thirteen contemporary art galleries established in Montreal, Quebec city and Ottawa are members. Thanks to their expertise, the AGAC enables contemporary art galleries to widen their market. The AGAC is proud of its fifteen years of significant contribution to the tremendous growth of the visual art scene locally and nationally.

Emerging from a proposal advanced by ADISQ at the Montreal Summit, the Quartier des spectacles Partnership was created in June 2003. A non-profit organization, the Partnership sets out a vision of development based on the enhancement of cultural activities in the life of its downtown neighbourhood. To promote this vision, the Partnership develops and implements projects to bring the neighbourhood together as a place to live and a place to create, and aims to position the area as one of Montreal's major centres of activity and an international cultural destination.

The Quartier des spectacles is centered on the intersection of Sainte-Catherine Street and Saint-Laurent Boulevard, covering almost a square kilometre bound by City Councillors Street, Berri Street, Sherbrooke Street, and René-Lévesque Boulevard. This area is home to 30 performance halls totalling almost 28,000 seats, numerous international festivals, art galleries and centres for the exhibition and broadcast of alternative culture. The Quartier des spectacles hosts more than 7,000 jobs linked to cultural activities, from education and creation to production, exhibition, and broadcasting. A part of Montreal's downtown, the neighbourhood forms the city's cultural heart.

The organization is made up of 23 area stakeholders, including representatives from the culture, real estate, education, and business sectors, as well as local residents, the Borough of Ville-Marie, the City of Montreal and the Government of Quebec. The Quartier des spectacles Partnership receives financial support from the City of Montreal, the Quebec Ministère des Affaires municipales et des Régions, Canada Economic Development and private partners.
