Catherine Bolduc at "La maison de la culture" FrontenacFrom March 13 to April 22 2012

"Travel in Europe and visiting museums have contributed to my awakening. This isa fall 1995, at the age of 36 years, I made the purchase of my first work, a painting figurative work depicting a flower. Over time, my aesthetic affinities and have transformed my passion led me to contemporary art. I collect art out of love, conviction and passion. Entanglement with strong images, disturbing and destabilizing moves me. The degree of intimacy and enrichment that I developed in these works transcends the purely material: it is expressed in a search for meaning connected with my values. My collection, eclectic, mainly based on the work of local artists whose age is at the beginning of the forties - the creators I’ve known for more than ten years. Over time, I stay home and quite faithful to this generation. Themes related to spirituality and faith, eroticism and sexuality, the environment and nature, money, wealth and power, cruelty, violence, war and alienation are discussed . These paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and sculptures challenge my perception of the world. The art is therefore testimony. In our society exhausted, technology-driven, over-consumption, competitiveness, power, and the ceaseless quest for profit, visual art reveals a very strategic place of beauty, reflection and freedom." Solo exhibition of Catherine BolducFrom March 2 to March 24 2012 at the McClure Gallery

The exhibition brings together a series of sculptural works and drawings depicting imaginary landscapes coming into being. The works capture mountains becoming marvelous fictions under the influence of time and distance.

Bolduc notes, “Whenever I travel to a foreign country, I reflect a lot on the difference between what I had imagined the place would be like and what it is actually like once you get there [. . .] I also reflect on how, along with this sense of deception, the effect of both time and distance transform our memories. Certain details are willingly erased, others are kept vividly embellished.” The exhibition Au milieu du monde (entre Mont Royal et mont Fuji) presents a series of works created as an echo to the atist’s experience while travelling. “On a recent trip to Japan, I discovered that Mount Fuji, about which I had dreamt for several weeks, was hidden most of the time behind a mysterious veil of fog. While living close to Mount Fuji, on the other side of the world, I started dreaming of Mount Royal which suddenly became distant, exotic, fantastic. As in a mirror reflection, I saw in my imagination the silhouette of Mount Royal as symetrical, diametrically opposed to that of Mount Fuji; I found myself in a world in between the orient and occident, east and west.”

The new series of works presented in the McClure Gallery follow from earlier work created in Japan, entitled, My Life as a Japanese Story, a kind of auto fiction in which Bolduc projects herself as a heroin of Manga into an imagined and fantastical Japan. Both series bear witness to the artist’s ongoing preoccupation with the ways in which we construct reality, projecting our desires and transgressing reality with the fabricated wonders of the psyche.

from March 3 to 6, 2011PULSE New York 2011

Galerie SAS is proud to announce its participation to the PULSE New York 2011 Contemporary Art Fair for a third consecutive year. This year, we will present a solo exhibition of the multidisciplinary artist Catherine Bolduc through a slection of drawings and sculptures.

Catherine Bolduc: In the practice of her art (installation, sculpture, video and drawing), Catherine Bolduc is interested in the way the human psyche perceives and constructs reality by feeding it with its own desires, by transgressing it with its fabrication of fantasy and fiction. The core of her work rests on subjective experiences dealing with personal memories in which fabulation and idealization produce a mental transfiguration of reality or conversely revisited desire is subjected to the ordeal of reality, illusion faces disillusion and deception head-on. Her work is an invitation to experience phantasmagorical objects and spaces alluding to, for instance, an ideal fantasized life, exotic quests, utopian dreams of love, oneiric wanderings, but where magic also reveals its dark side. Her aesthetic intention is to evoke human vulnerability when facing the discrepancy between desires and reality.
